Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau near Füssen is the most famous castle in the world and one of the most visited castles in Europe. It opened to the public seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886. Around 1.3 million people – from all parts of the world – visit the castle of the fairytale king every year. The idyllic location of Neuschwanstein Castle is uniquely built into the Upper Bavarian mountains.
Ludwig II’s Linderhof royal palace is located in the Graswang valley near Oberammergau. In the years 1874 to 1878, the king had it built by Georg Dollmann in place of a hunting lodge for his father Maximilian II.
Linderhof is the smallest of the three royal castles and was the king’s favorite castle, which he also lived in. The parks belonging to the castle with a 22 meter high fountain and a terrace with a temple of Venus originate from the planning of Carl von Effner. A Moorish kiosk, the Moroccan house, the Hundinghütte and an artificial grotto also belong to the extensive area around Linderhof Palace.
Oberammergau is a municipality in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district in Upper Bavaria. It is located in the Ammer Valley on the Ammer River. Oberammergau is best known for the Passion Play that takes place every ten years (most recently in 2010) and for its facades decorated with Lüftlmalerei. Worth seeing examples of this baroque painting are the facades of the forester’s house, the Mußldomahaus and the Pilatushaus.
The 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play will take place from May 16 to October 4, 2020. The Passion Play dates back to a vow made in 1633 and is considered one of the most important religious and cultural events in Germany. 102 performances are planned for the next Passion Play. The Passionstheater in Oberammergau has around 4,500 seats, making it the largest open-air stage with a covered auditorium in the world. In 2020, Oberammergau expects around ½ million visitors from all over the world.
